the Brass Bambees On the Making Of “On With The Show”

How does "On With The Show" reflect your musical journey and growth as a band?

As a band we have already been on a bit of a rollercoaster establishing our sound and final 5 members. The new single “On With The Show” was written during this period, and I definitely think it mirrors our realisation that this is the final family and product we wanted move forward with.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "On With The Show?"

Writing this song started with a simple concept of calm and steady verses, that then builds to a loud, squealing chorus. We want to hit people with that transition whilst they’re off guard. We wanted the storyline to detail a rise and fall type story. It’s about being from a small town like Merthyr Tydfil, and not having anything to other than live a life of drinking, partying and general “debauchery” for cheap thrills. We see cases like this every day in our small town, we wanted to write about our experience feeling like we’re being sucked into the same sad lifestyle.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "On With The Show?"

We recorded this track at EVI studios in Ebbw Vale, South Wales with Jon Contstantine, who really helped in the final shaping of this song. We had three days in the studio recording a few tracks and it was one big joyful experience from start to finish. Hearing everything gelled together finally made it feel like our hard work was paying off. One memory that stands out in the studio was when we were all singing group backings at the same time with only two monitoring headphones. One person would have to count us all in and it went wrong a few times which was worth it for the laugh.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they impacted your own sound?

As a band we all had a very different introduction to music, what genres we grew up on and moulded us. Ranging from indie rock, hard-core, post-punk alternative rock, and rap. We believe it’s the wide range of individual interests that helped us accomplish the sound we have today. We get told that it reminds people of bands such as “IDLES, Soft Play and Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes”. We are all huge fans of these artists so we are genuinely overwhelmed to be compared to such successful acts.

What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?

We think that playing live is one of the best parts of as a growing band. Seeing the numbers increase of people singing along, and the two stepping maniacs that push to the front and go just as hard as us. This is one of the beautiful things about being in a Punk/Indie/Alternative-rock band, it gives you a chance to hit people in the heart with your music or make them flail their body’s around without care. At the end of the gig when we walk off stage to the people waiting to shake our hands or buy us a pint, that is always the most sincere and gratifying moments you can experience as a musician…. That is what music is all about.
