5 Q&A With Genevieve Sovereign
What impact do you hope "Saturn in Chinos" will have on your audience?
I chose “Saturn in Chinos” as the lead single for my new experimental electronic album ‘STARSEEDS WANTED: enquire within’ (LP released 28 March 2025) both because of how much the song means to me personally, as well as how perfectly it encapsulates what I’ve always wanted to achieve for the SWew album. My hope is that listeners feel like they’re on the same journey with me.
Because of the insight and connection “Saturn in Chinos” offers around my progress as an artist and human, I feel that’s also helped this song manifest some truly humbling achievements – such as the honour of it being produced by vocal / ambient / beats fusion artist Becki Whitton (alternatively known by her artist name “Aphir”).
“Saturn in Chinos” has also been my first professionally produced music video, directed by Leong Chan with artistic consultation from my dear friend and movement coach Jessica Angelique Gabrielli. Freshly released onto my YouTube channel this 30 April 2025, the official music video can be found at this link…
That music video incidentally has a kind of “bonus ending sequence” which includes an important dedication for the song, a bit about its inspiration, and also an outtake of me nearly stacking onto my butt in one of the outdoor sequences. Fun times all, which I hope viewers will connect with!
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
Funnily enough, I wrote an Instagram post when mid-production on it with Becki last year. That tells the “Saturn in Chinos” evolution story wonderfully, so I’ll excerpt it here…
“…What a massive evolution this song has undertaken in production! Two verses and the bridge rewritten; vocal delivery tone shifted from night to day; and overall energy levels up by at least an order of magnitude or few. The song’s first draft incarnation was undeniably steeped in overtones of sadness and self-doubt (driven by assumed narratives), with its initial lyrics and delivery approach reflecting those lower vibrations. But then Becki’s first-pass production showed me all of that in stark clarity: Exposing inauthenticities held within those rough materials I’d initially provided. That prelim production pass was a real gut-punch to hear, but also 100% necessary.
It opened up needed space to let the real (or at least a more real?) “Saturn in Chinos” song in… Allowing me to realise it’s actually always been destined as a song of joy - of gratitude for the endless opportunities to choose our paths in this world, across every moment we’re here. A song of vibrancy, exploration, welcome… With room for grief and doubt, only because those too are inherently parts of this wondrously beautiful adventure.
Thank you so much, Becki! Hopefully others will connect with “Saturn in Chinos” in ways that help their journey to progress too - and leading ‘STARSEEDS WANTED: enquire within’ as the album’s focus track when it drops in 2025, I’ve decided. It’s all happening, whee...”
So that was what I shared on my Instagram back in December 2024 and accordingly now for your delight is “Saturn in Chinos” as it exists today, both in album and music video format!
What did you enjoy most about making this music video?
Collaborating with such amazing humans, 100%. One of my absolute favourite things about any creative undertaking is collaboration – with other artists as well as audiences, because any communication requires both a sender and receiver after all!
Getting to work with people in alignment with shared visions and goals is a remarkable process for me. We all hold space for each other to explore, express and interpret to the best of our abilities and callings. To me that is a deeply sacred endeavour, whatever form it takes.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
A number of factors have contributed to my chosen path, and still do: Lifelong love of music, movement and artwork in all forms; an ongoing drive explore and experiment; fascination with new ideas, approaches and concepts; unwavering passion to keep learning, growing and developing myself… My career actually spans a number of areas outside of music too – such as teaching and facilitation; project management and communications; academic research and more. I enjoy keeping myself entertained!
Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?
Absolutely! Strategising possibilities ATM for another music video with Leong Chan (who directed that aforementioned fresh-out “Saturn in Chinos” music video, this time for my collaboration with Jude Austin O called “I, O” which is track 09 on the ‘STARSEEDS WANTED: enquire within’ album. Filming is likely to begin next month when Jude makes his way down to Melbourne briefly, and it’ll incidentally be the first time that Jude and I meet in-person. Exciting stuff ahead for sure!
If anyone’s interested in keeping across the latest as it unfolds by the way, I’d welcome company across any of the platforms we might share per…
