5 Q&A With Julianna Joy
What is the creative process like?
For ‘Somebody Call the Firemen!’, it was a lot of me starting the songs on my piano at home and bringing them into the session with Dee. I like starting a song and getting the initial ideas down so I can finish it as we are producing the track. I find that that helps the song feel fleshed and connected to the sonic atmosphere we create between lyrics and instrumentation.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for 'SOMEBODY CALL THE FIREMEN!?'
I think it really scared me to write an entire album about my self image. I needed to write this record - I don't know who I'd be without this album. I'm terrified of putting out music and being known for the things I am scared of. I decided to embrace it and face the fear head on.
Which song(s) do you like the best and why?
It changes all the time. Right now, I think it's "Their family dog" because it means so much to my family and to my childhood best friend Ari and his mom. It's an ode I never thought I'd be capable of writing.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
I've been writing music since I was 11 and knew that music was the only thing I ever wanted to do. My goal in this life is to change the way that pop music is perceived and influence what kind of stories can be told through music.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
Most of my songs are based on my life and my interests. Honestly I find inspiration in everything from the most mundane events to the most dramatic.
