5 Q&A With Libby Johnston
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of 'Libby?'
This project started with the title. I knew I wanted to create four or five songs that I was insanely proud of, which could then be released as a self-titled extended play. I’m still finding my feet and figuring out where I belong in the music scene, so this work really serves as my introduction.
Were there any moments in the recording process where you knew you had something special?
The song that kickstarted everything was “Aftermath”. Joey Miceli sent me a demo and I fell in love with it instantly. “Aftermath” is a direct response to my debut single, “Right Person, Wrong Time” - it talks to the same person but pivots 180 degrees in tone. It’s an exclamation that I will never again settle for less because I now know I deserve so much more.
Can you talk about any standout tracks on the EP and what makes them special to you?
“Eldest Child” is incredibly special to me. I’m from New Zealand and was fortunate enough to be able to go back home to Auckland for Christmas this past year. I woke up one morning and decided to record the sounds outside my bedroom window. Santino Cardinale was able to incorporate what I recorded into the track, so the first thing you hear is the isolated New Zealand birdsong. Much like Lorde’s “Oceanic Feeling”, whenever I hear “Eldest Child”, I’m immediately transported back to my home and my family.
How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?
I’m still really new to songwriting. “Right Person, Wrong Time” (released in March 2023) was the first song I ever wrote, and it never would have seen the light of day if not for Joey Miceli, Alyssa Payne and Santino Cardinale. I’m so grateful to have a group of friends who inspire me personally and professionally. It’s truly because of them that I have the confidence to keep creating and recording.
What do you find most rewarding about co-writing with others?
I’ve known Joey Miceli for six years now, and from the first day I met him, I was in absolute awe of his talent. Co-writing with him is a dream come true as he’s a master of his craft. It’s so rewarding to work together as I’m able to learn so much from his process and his kindness.
