Aggressive Soccer Moms Talk About “Tomorrow Was Wonderful,” Punk Rock, and Staying Creative
“Punk is just that, having a laugh and telling the truth, not caring about what people tell you to do.”
When things get hard, most people sit down on a couch and start reflecting on the good ol’ days, but not Aggressive Soccer Moms. They are a dark ray of sunshine that breaks through the thick clouds hovering over your head with a sprinkle of joy that lights up the world just right.
Instead of looking back into the past, the punk rockers look under the rocks to find everything worth fighting for, which brings us to their new invention — billed as a “more commercial” track from the band, “Tomorrow Was Wonderful” features a mesmerizing hook and darkly hypnotizing soundscapes that draw elements from dark wave, synth pop, post punk, and art rock.
In an interview with Punk Head, they opened up about the song they wrote about “hope in desperate times” and the hope they have for a better future.
Punk Head: What keeps you creating, especially in such a rapidly changing industry?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: We write and produce music out of necessity, we love music, and we love to play together. The fact that the music industry has changed shape makes no difference in the creation. A good song is always a good song.
Punk Head: When people hear the name Aggressive Soccer Moms, they might expect chaos — but your sound has always been more about precision, tone, and mood. Where did that balance between irony and sincerity come from?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: All the members of the band were punks in 1977 when we were kids. And punk is just that, having a laugh and telling the truth, not caring about what people tell you to do. We have several close friends who don't "understand" us at all. Who thinks we are serious and boring. At the same time, we think we are very funny.
Punk Head: “Tomorrow Was Wonderful” has been described as “more commercial” — at least by your own standards. What does commercial mean to Aggressive Soccer Moms in 2025?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: When we say we are commercial, I think we mean it sounds a bit like something you heard before. And in the case of this current single, in our opinion, it is very commercial because you can sing along to the chorus.
Punk Head: The title alone feels poetic, almost like nostalgia in reverse. What does that phrase mean to you personally?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: I think it's about hope in desperate times. A hope that tomorrow will bring something worth remembering.
Punk Head: You’ve always had a unique sonic fingerprint. When you approach a new track, do you ever think, What would sound like us? — or do you try to forget your own history completely?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: We have a saying in the band that we can do whatever music we feel like and then put it through the Aggressive Soccer Moms machine, and it will sound like us anyway. That gives us infinite artistic freedom that we want to explore and exploit.
Punk Head: Many artists from your era either stopped evolving or reinvented themselves to chase trends. You seem to do neither — you just keep making. What’s your secret to staying curious after so long?
Aggressive Soccer Moms: We really like and listen to innovative bands like the Beatles, The Fall, The Cure, Wire, Cabaret Voltaire and all sorts of avantgarde. Punk, Postpunk, Artrock, electronica, jazz and techno, to mention a few. There are so many brilliant things and ideas in there that we still find new things to marvel at. It's like deep-sea diving, the deeper you get, the more fantastic creatures you'll meet. Brilliance is in the details.
And through social media, we have discovered a lot of interesting bands that also inspire us. The post-punk scene in NYC is very exciting. The bands there are 30 years younger than us, and they have a presence that we try to embrace. But the most important thing is that we feel no limits in our creative process.
