Alexa Lash On the Making Of “Fate”
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Fate" and the story it tells?
“Fate,” as a lyrical story questions and analyzes the concept of “fate” through personification and self-reflection. It really started out as a look back on life, the idea that we take too long to take chances or risks. And then really considering, if life is already pre-decided, do our actions one way or the other make a difference to where we end up? In the personification of fate, it becomes a lover, a game-maker, a dance partner. Fate waffles between having control and being at the mercy of humanity.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Fate?"
It was my co-writer’s first time recording in-studio. So that was a special moment for both of us. I got to guide him, and it’s pretty cool to see the spark…that spark that happens when you enjoy recording. When you know beyond a doubt that you’re going to want to do it again. I saw that spark in him, and we’re already almost done with our second song together.
How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?
I think this song is an evolution in my sound and my artistic diversity. I wanted to make music that felt a little darker, a little more conceptual. I think every time you work with a new collaborator, you get something new out of your sound, and working with my co-writer, Pedro, has brought out another side to my music that I’m excited to explore more.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
I used to sing in my elementary school chorus, but really didn’t take music seriously as an artist, didn’t even really think it was a possible career path, until my late 20s. Then I took a chance, a leap of faith, and started writing lyrics and melodies and didn’t stop. I love incorporating my love of poetry and storytelling into my music, applying things I learned in my education. I love evolving and experimenting with genre and style. I don’t want to be an artist with a voice that doesn’t grow as I do. I want to explore more avenues, and new sounds. I’m looking forward to wherever my artistic exploration will take me next.
What do you find most rewarding about co-writing with others?
I’ve always loved how writing with others brings about new and untapped areas of your artistry. I get to explore areas of music where I may not have gone on my own. Also, it builds community. Working with others, collaborating, really drives musical growth for all parties involved in a song, and I think it’s important to keep building community and creativity through co-writing and other means.
