Alfie Connor On the Making Of “Outside The Water”

What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Outside The Water?"

It was included in a group of random phrases given to me during a songwriting game. The line really popped out to me and the song just seemed to be there.

Was there any challenge that you encountered while making the track?

'The biggest one was letting my voice take centre stage. It took me a while to be confident enough to let my voice be the most powerful part of my songs. For a long time, I struggled and covered it up with lots of other instruments. I said to myself I was trying to get a bigger sound by adding more in, but really I think I was covering up my voice because I felt very scared of people hearing my rawest and most real expression. The biggest sound ended up being something with hardly any instruments in and letting my voice be raw and more powerful.'

How do you feel "Outside The Water" represents your artistic identity?

'It's expressive, passionate and honest.'

How has studying at Goldsmiths made an impact on your music career?

'Goldsmiths changed my life really, I wouldn't be singing how I do now if it wasn't for attending, but also for the people I met there and formed relationships with. I have much gratitude and it's a very special place. It taught me a way to think about my work that wasn't about commercial success but just about the work in its own merit. That way of living has stayed with me and continues to grow stronger.’

Can you share a memorable experience from a collaboration that enriched your music?

Anyone that knows me knows I've had tons of psychotherapy. Right now I think of the collaboration that occurs in the therapy room, helping me look at the scariest and most beautiful things.
