Artist Spotlight: Meet Dan Gober

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Stoned Supreme" and the story it tells?

“Stoned Supreme” is a concept that explores fixating on a certain idea and going further down the rabbit hole all while staying inside your mind. It’s a bit of a trip but in the story ends with a beautiful light of clarity.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for this song?

In a typical rock formation we tracked drums and bass first to build a foundation. Since the backing vocals played such a big role, we tracked close to twenty voices which took some experimenting to find the right combination. For the guitars, I tracked them with just enough bite without being too heavy. The end result was an arrangement of different textures and rhythms while keeping it direct and to the point with a big chorus.

What did you enjoy most about making this single?

Working out the harmonies was a blast. We tried so many different combinations of phrasing and voices. But, it wasn’t until mixing the song really came alive. Once the marriage of bass and drums came together we knew it was special.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I’ve always had a very active imagination and once I found music things clicked for me. Not to say that it has been a smooth ride but it was music that made sense to me. I’ve never grown tired of creating something that didn’t exist twenty minutes ago. There is a special magic in the art of songwriting.

How do you continuously grow and evolve as an artist?

For me, it’s all about experimenting. You have to be willing to explore new sounds, textures, rhythms and voices.
