Artist Spotlight: Meet Palm Lakes
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "Silent Types?"
The first spark actually happened one quiet evening in Taiwan. I was sitting on the sofa with an acoustic guitar, just messing around with some chords, when the chorus suddenly came to me—melody, lyrics, the whole thing, almost all at once. It was one of those surreal moments where it comes together so quickly, your first instinct is to question whether you’ve accidentally lifted it from somewhere else! But once I realized it was completely original, I got really excited. The next day, I dove straight into the studio and started shaping the demo, building everything around that initial idea.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Silent Types?"
Absolutely—one of the coolest parts was how much of the demo ended up in the final mix. The chorus guitar and bass lines you hear now were actually recorded in those early sessions. One standout memory was crafting the synth solo. We threw a bunch of melodic ideas at the wall just to see what would stick, and that playful energy ended up becoming a big part of the song’s personality. Another fun touch was adding the counter vocal melody at the end. There’s a Bon Jovi track called If I Was Your Mother that uses this really haunting, processed vocal line in the fade-out, and that totally inspired us. Little additions like that give the track an extra layer of colour and depth.
What impact do you hope this song will have on your audience?
"Silent Types" is the third release in our series of six new singles, and we wanted this one to have a real sense of momentum—an uptempo, synth-driven sound that still carries emotional weight. There’s definitely energy in the music, but also meaning in the lyrics. We hope listeners connect with that balance: something they can move to, but that also resonates on a deeper level.
Can you tell us more about you as a duo?
We’re brothers, based in Taiwan, and we work full-time as songwriters—writing and producing for artists and projects all over the world. Palm Lakes is our passion project, our creative space where we can dive into everything we love about music. We’re heavily inspired by the ‘80s—both sonically and visually. There’s something timeless about the atmosphere, the style, and the emotion of that era, and we try to channel that into our own sound.
What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?
Lyrics are one of my favourite parts of the process. For us, emotion is everything. We’ve always been drawn to music that makes you feel something—whether it’s nostalgia, joy, heartbreak, or hope. Palm Lakes gives us the space to explore those feelings, often drawing from our own experiences. Even when the production is bright and synth-heavy, there’s always something personal underneath. We hope that honesty comes through and gives people something to connect with.
