Colston On the Making Of “Helene”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

This song came to me very fast, I felt very driven to finish it. I felt inspired to do something for my area, with the overall goal of raising money for non-profits.

Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in "Helene?"

I wanted to showcase the frustration, yet still show the willingness of those affected by Hurricane Helene to band together and rebuild.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Helene?"

I sat in with multi-talented musician Don Lewis. He happens to be one of the best fiddle players in the country. Watching him freestyle his tracking to my song was incredible. He just played it on the fly after one listen.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

I am an Appalachian hip hop artist. After years of avoiding my upbringing and roots, I've decided to embrace it and give the country rap scene some substance. I rap about real problems and relatable issues.

How do you approach collaborations with other musicians and maintain creative synergy?

Collaborating and cowriting are two of my favorite parts of being a songwriter. I like to isolate and write on certain nights, but being in studio with others is the best. I like to encourage any and all ideas, to get the best final product.
