Echomatica On the Making Of “Technicolour Dreams”

Punk Head: Your music blends dream pop, trip-hop and alt-rock. When you write, which element usually leads - atmosphere, groove, or melody?

Echomatica: It probably leads more towards the groove. We tend to write in layers - once we have the feel and rhythm working, we improvise from their until we settle into the sound. We often jam songs for a while to see what clicks, particularly when Charlotte finds the melody.

Punk Head: This song feels bigger and more cinematic. What pushed you to expand the scope this time?

Echomatica: We have two versions of this. The album one is more laid-back, whereas we brought the guitars up for the single mix for a bit more punch. It started just by experimenting with open chords, and it gave a dream-pop sort of vibe.

Punk Head: What does the phrase Technicolour Dreams represent for you personally?

Echomatica: It's about the feeling of being slightly disconnected from the world, and those feelings you have when you find someone and stop noticing the real world for a little while, or at least perceiving it differently. It's almost a 'Wizard of Oz' - inspired track in some ways!

Punk Head: You’ve hit #1 multiple times on NZ alt charts. How do you stay grounded while momentum builds?

Echomatica: Well, it's all pretty new for us. We're just delighted that people have enjoyed what we've put out. We're pretty critical of ourselves on the whole, so there's no room for getting carried away, to be honest.

Punk Head: Do any particular sonic influences shape this single more than previous ones?

Echomatica: We definitely leaned into the retro feel, and an '80's mixtape' sort of style. It isn't any one band in particular, just a general feeling, but hopefully it still feels fresh and very much one facet of our style.
