Feature: Breadcrumbs Decodes “So Sticky”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
I had the two couplets (verses) written down and tried to sing them over two chords. There was a big gap which I had fun filling with ascending and descending vocals representing a minor argument that gets resolved. I recorded it with just guitar and vocals and sent it to the rest of the band. The others added the music and chaingangesque backing vocals and we had a completely unique song. The sentiment is about sticking together in divisive times. There is a lot going on in just over 90 seconds. You don’t get a chance to get bored.
How has the audience response been to "So Sticky" during live shows?
We have mainly gigged in the North East to our loyal fans who are always generous and warm. We are looking forward to playing it further afield.
How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?
We like to try stuff that’s different and maybe a bit odd and not too serious.
If we enjoy playing it in rehearsals, we will play it live. We hope the fact that we enjoy playing together so much, comes across in our performances.
Can you tell us more about you as a band?
We’ve been together just under 3 years. Geoff (drums, vocals), Bill (bass, vocals), Dave (guitar, vocals) and Andy (vocals, guitar). We live in North Tyneside although Andy is an Essex boy. Influences and comparisons are far and wide. The best bit for us is when something new comes together and it works. No-one is too prescriptive with ideas so as we evolve, stuff comes out we couldn’t have dreamed of.
Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?
Yes. Our next single “The True Navigator” is out on June 16th, and our second album ‘The Breadcrumbs’ is due for release on 30th June (LP, CD, stream). We’re delighted with it. We’re launching it on 27th June at the Engine Room in North Shields. We are going to play it live from start to finish and hopefully sell a few copies while we’re at it! But there’s also a deal on our Bandcamp for people to buy the vinyl and get a free ticket for the gig. Not one to miss...
