Feature: Giuseppe Bonaccorso Decodes “L'Ombra della Terra”
What is the inspiration behind it?
I have been writing poetry for several decades and have composed a significant amount of instrumental music. At a certain point, I wanted to go further, to transcend the limits of each artistic discipline and explore more direct means of communication.
So, I started composing songs whose structure reflects my way of thinking, rather than adhering to stereotypical, mainstream concepts. With a strong inclination toward spiritual exploration, I endeavored to distill the key concepts of my perspective on reality into a set of lyrics. In the music, I expressed the existential turmoil that may be necessary to undergo to reach a higher level of awareness and serenity.
Was there any challenge that you encountered while making "L'Ombra della Terra?"
The creative process has always aligned with my perspective on musical and communicative reality. For this reason, I have not encountered any particular problems to overcome, except for the choice of the structure of the instrumental ensemble to convey the concepts I wanted to communicate clearly and concisely.
Since this is progressive music, I place no limits on the choice of instruments (both acoustic and electronic). Hence, the range of choices is truly boundless, and only through lengthy experimentation can I find the solutions that, in my view, are the best.
What impact do you hope "L'Ombra della Terra" will have on your audience?
The mainstream has mistreated progressive music and deserves a global re-evaluation. I am just a drop in the ocean, but I sincerely hope that lovers of the genre will listen to me and support me in this "counter-current" work. Furthermore, although I have decided to write the lyrics of the songs in Italian, I hope that all those interested in a type of music that combines art and esoteric-spiritual research will find my work to their liking.
What draws you to experimental music/art?
No other type of music can have artistic value outside of pure experimentation. I make no secret of my hatred for the mainstream and its tendency to commodify every product of the human mind. This is inconceivable for an artist who cannot and must not submit to any market rules, unless they are minor adjustments helpful for enjoyment. The exact reasons apply to song lyrics, which are too often deliberately banal and insipid. The poetry that was once the cornerstone of songs has now almost disappeared, so that an ever-wider audience (including, of course, those who are completely unprepared) can always enjoy new "musical merchandise."
I will always go in the opposite direction. I don't care if my niche is just a crack in the wall: I cannot (and will not) distort myself in search of useless success.
How do you continuously grow and evolve as an artist?
I believe that an artist can do nothing but evolve along with their surroundings. Art always remains a form of communication, and the source of the messages conveyed through works of art lies in part in the macrocosm that surrounds the artist. Many ideas indeed arise from introspection, but it is equally valid that their elaboration and transformation into artistic elements always pass through the gateway of reality, which is constantly changing. My approach to creating progressive music is based on my current experiences and perceptions, and both the lyrics and musical forms cannot reflect this essential condition.
