Feature: Rose Cora Perry & The Truth Untold Decodes “Excuses”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
I was jamming one late night by myself going through an old setlist and I remember hearing the first lyric of the song in my head, “I’m sick of the excuses”. I thought that’d be a hell of a way to start a song so I started messing around with some chords and within about 10 minutes, the whole thing came together. I did revise the lyrics a bit from the original draft to make them more universal and less personal but the sentiment remains the same.
What impact do you hope "Excuses" will have on your audience?
I hope people will love it (goes without saying!) but also hope that the message of the song will get them thinking: don’t stay in any kind of partnership that isn’t good for you. Everyone needs to take accountability and responsibility for their actions. Partnerships – romantic, business and otherwise – don’t fail because two people weren’t willing to put in the effort. They fail because one person was carrying all of the weight while the other was making, you guessed it, “excuses.”
What did you enjoy most about making the music video?
Going full-on Nic Cage and somehow convincing my band and videographer to orchestrate an explosion with gasoline…Hard to know how we’ll top this but I’ll think of something! Yes, that is REAL fire – not CGI.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a band, and how did you overcome them?
Having to regroup last year mid-tour and recruit a new drummer within two days so we didn’t have to cancel our visa or tour for starters…all whilst going through a bad breakup.
I’m so thankful for my bassist Jessie – she was my rock and there for me in ways she probably doesn’t even know. I’m so thankful too for The Truth Untold’s current lineup – everyone is so talented and so wonderful to work with. It’s a completely different dynamic and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve come up with together.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?
Being able to break down barriers of difference and just connect with people in a really visceral meaningful way. Music is so powerful as a language that hits people emotionally. It’s amazing being on stage seeing audiences react to art that you created, that came from your heart and soul.
