GAYSHAWN On the Making Of “#WeOut”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

The creative process for “#WeOut” was honestly one of the most liberating experiences I’ve had. I started with a beat that instantly made me feel like I was walking away from everything that tried to hold me back. I wrote the lyrics in one night, almost like a journal entry turned anthem. It was about reclaiming power— leveling up, and not apologizing for it.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "#WeOut?"

I wanted the energy to feel confident, fierce, and free.

At first, I struggled with being too careful—trying to make the song fit a mold. But the breakthrough came when I stopped editing myself. I told myself, “Say exactly what you feel.” That’s when the hook came together, and the whole track took on a life of its own. It stopped being just a song and became a statement.

How do you feel "#WeOut" represents your artistic identity?

“#WeOut” is me in full color. It’s bold, unapologetic, a little glam, and 100% real. My artistry is about telling the truth—even when it’s loud, even when it challenges people. This track represents my growth and my refusal to shrink myself. It’s about standing tall in every part of who I am.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

I’m an artist who turns pain into power. I grew up in foster care, had to fight to find my voice, and now that I’ve found it, I’m not letting go. My influences range from Lady Gaga to Nicki Minaj to gospel choirs I grew up hearing. I blend that into something uniquely mine—queer, black, emotional, fearless. I want to break barriers and make people feel seen.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

Always. I want my music to say: You’re allowed to take up space. You’re allowed to heal. You’re allowed to shine. I talk about identity, self-worth, resilience, and joy—especially for queer people and people of color. My music is my love letter to the ones who’ve ever been told they’re “too much” or “not enough.” We are everything. And we’re out here.
