Inside Rose Hound’s Restless Debut Era
Punk Head: “Keys To The City” feels driven by momentum rather than release. There’s no real sense of arrival. Was that a reaction against more traditional song structures or just where the emotion naturally landed?
Jason Douglas: Keys is actually the first song we all worked on together as Rose Hound, so we started with the vision Grant brought in and just let it rip. We weren’t all too concerned with the structure, we wanted it to land where it felt the most honest about where we want this band to go sonically. It's a great way to introduce ourselves as a band that will push and pull the dynamics within a song.
Punk Head: There’s a recurring idea in your bio and the song itself about chasing something just out of reach. Is that a personal feeling, a band dynamic, or more of a thematic lens you’re consciously writing through?
Jason: Yes. No. Also Yes. Haha. The consistency is something I think we all shared going into the room together for the first time. We’ve all had different experiences over the years, but the commonality we recognized before and during the writing process was that we still want more. See more, do more, play more. Write in ways we haven’t before. I think that common thread among us shows up in the music and especially the lyrics right now.
Punk Head: There’s a subtle push and pull between control and chaos in the way the band is described. When you’re writing together, who or what acts as the anchor when things start to drift?
Jason: One thing we all brought to the room on day 1 was that we wanted to collaborate. So depending on the song, maybe which portion of it we’re tryna figure out, really any one of us can be the one who breaks it open with the next idea. There’s no bad ideas, but there are the best ones, and that can come from anywhere. Sometimes it's at 2am two days after the last session, sometimes it happens on the first swing and everyone goes ‘oooh yyyeeaaaah’ like the Koolaid Man. It's been a fun process.
Punk Head: You’ve all spent years on the road. What habits did you have to unlearn to make this band work?
Jason: I think we’re all a little older and wiser. But we’re never not gonna wanna slam around on stage, ya know? So you just gotta learn how to take care of yourself and look out for each other. Get your stretches in. Warm up. Hydrate. Less unlearning and more implementing the stuff maybe we didn’t when we were younger. Responsibility is the new Rock n Roll.
Punk Head: If this single is the first statement, what are you deliberately holding back?
Jason: I think what people will start to see as more songs come out is a consistency in the way our songs sound and feel without sounding like it's the same song over and over again. This first EP is a great snapshot of what we’re capable of and we’re only getting started.
