LED On the Making Of “Lies All Lies”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
EY (Edie Yvonne) + LO (Layne Olivia): We wrote this song for a short film we did together over the summer at Shanelle Gray’s film camp. We started by writing down lines and words from the film that stood out to us and built a story inspired by the film from there. There were many specific moments from the film that we referenced in our lyrics.
LP (Lockett Pentz): Well, this song was our first song as a band but we became fast friends during the movie camp so it was like a super fun hangout with friends while also writing a sick song for a movie for the credits.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Lies All Lies?"
EY and LO: Collaborating on lyrics is an exciting process. It felt more familiar to us since we exchanged ideas in a notebook and could visibly see each other’s thought processes. But collaborating on melodies was something that felt newer. Combining ideas on sound is very different than that of words so we really enjoyed building out the melodic aspect of the song as a team, instrumentally and vocally.
LP: I don’t think there were many challenges when we were writing the song because we were all just messing around and having lots of fun. But once we finished the song we were super happy with the finished product.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Lies All Lies?"
EY + LO: We saw a peacock outside the recording studio window.
LP: While we were recording, I remember we talked about starting a band and writing more songs after “Lies All Lies”, and that made me very happy.
Can you tell us more about you as a trio?
EY: Layne and Lockett had been friends for a long time before I met them. But when I did, they were instantly friendly. During film camp, we got close and decided to write a song for the short film. We’ve become such great friends since and I love collaborating with them. Our rehearsals, recording sessions, and performances are always filled with laughter. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to re-focus ‘cause we could joke around for hours. I’m so glad I met them both, I love the ideas we come up with as a collective.
LP: We just clicked. We decided to become friends and make a band.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they impacted your own sound?
EY: I personally love Lola Young’s music. Her song “Conceited” is my favorite song ever. I’m inspired by many bands like No Doubt, Veruca Salt, and Garbage.
LP: I really like artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day. They have really influenced my drumming style because they are both more rock and punk while LED is more pop so my drumming style is a hybrid style of 80s rock and 2000s pop that I like to call “2080 rock and pop.”
