LOMENS On the Making Of “Kinetic Currency”

How did you come up with the idea?

The concept initially was sparked from Chris reading an article about the retirement age potentially raising again! Ha, so lyrically the song started to take form from this and a lot of the lyrics you're hearing are about constantly having to trade your mind and body in never ending forward motion to an end goal of perceived financial stability. Something that for most working class Brits these days, rarely comes to fruition, infact that stability can ironically sometimes end up further away no matter how hard some people work. Hence the title "Kinetic Currency". To further add to that we started to expand the idea into more than just chasing money, but to just document what a working-class person in the UK sees on a day-to-day basis, that's where the music video shines a little more. There's no allegiance to any political movement or anything like that, it's purely observational, the world as it looks, or at least what we see, at the present. A time stamp of life in the UK in 2025 so to speak.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "Kinetic Currency?"

Our songwriting process can vary, but generally speaking, someone comes to rehearsal with quite a loose idea, a guitar riff, a chord progression, maybe a groove on the drums for example, and then we jam it as a band and see how it evolves. We like to keep things as organic as possible as each of us has our own distinct style (at least we think we do ha!) and we've found the best way for us all to amalgamate our ideas is through jamming. You can't always create magic individually or emulate that without playing with other musicians, or at least that’s how it works out for us! Sometimes this results in a song evolving pretty quickly, like our last single, Unplug the Earth, which just fell into place really quickly. As for Kinetic Currency, after the jam period we spent quite a long time refining each section and experimenting with layers and dynamics until we finally got to the finished product.

In short, we like to jam!

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

Well we attempted to do some first person angles initially, and as we was on a tight budget, we made our own props for this aswell. One of those was taking a cat toy, removing the toy from the end and replacing it with a £20 note, attaching that to a hat and then filming it from a first person perspective, a carrot and stick scenario essentially. Safe to say, this looked utterly ridiculous to film and we quickly realised doing a full video like this was basically going to look terrible. This is why we started to overlay a tonne of footage in the way we did, it seemed like an effective way to make a video on a budget look somewhat "professional" or at least as pro as we could manage! Some of that silly footage is actually in there if you look carefully!

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

Sure, so there's 6 of us, Jordan (Drums), Tom (Percussion + Synth), Andy (Bass), Josh (Lead Guitar), Jason (Rhythm Guitar) and Chris (Vocals). We're all from West Yorkshire, UK and we first went active in August 2024. We're still very much a baby band! However in that time we have also had a couple of line up changes! Finally we've settled on the current set up, with Andy and Tom being the most recent and final additions to the band. This set up enables us to add in so many extra elements to our song writing and has added quite a visceral sonic edge to our live shows, which is very important to us. Our live show is something we really try to take time to improve upon and evolve with, it's where you get to really showcase your passion for music after all, so we like to try to make sure the audience feels like they've just witnessed something captivating and original. We've all been friends for many years so the chemistry amongst the band is great and something we pride ourselves on, you couldn't ask for a better group of lads to make music with! We've all got eclectic and expansive music tastes and a desire to make sure our music is original and noting but 'us'. Hopefully this single showcases a bit of this!

Do you aim to convey any specific themes or messages through your music?

We never aimed for anything specific, we just started with a desire to simply play music. However, we seem to have naturally landed on a theme of personal struggle and generally conveying the stresses that everyday life throws at you. A desire for solace and simplicity is something I think we all lean towards. We're all quite deep thinkers just trying to get on with living the best way we can despite whatever life throws at us. Jordan and Chris aren’t afraid to admit they both struggle with managing their mental health battles, so maybe that just naturally started to shine through within the music. This theme seems to have struck a chord with our fans, it's nice to feel that we're putting something out there that resonates with people, and if it doesn't, well hopefully people just like the music! We're having fun regardless.
