Review: mgk and Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Blog Era Boyz’ Mixtape
Wiz Khalifa is one of the defining artists in the hip-hop blog era. From 2000 to 2010, early social platforms, blogs, and independent mixtape sites changed how new rappers are discovered. The pivotal time, which is also known as the internet era, allowed emerging artists to reach their fan bases directly. Less relying on traditional radio placement and major-label rollouts, the era saw a rise in projects and new names that attracted widespread attention.
Behind-the-scenes clips, freestyles, and vlogs also allowed the audience to connect with artists more directly. A few era-defining names include Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, and many more. MGK emerged late in the era. He released four mixtapes from 2007 to 2010, which led to him eventually signing with Bad Boy Records.
Blog Era Boyz is less filtered and feels more fun in comparison to MGK’s last album, Lost Americana. The mixtape is filled with captivating tunes that can be listened to on repeat forever. On “everything tatted,” the artists sing about their full-body tattoos. “girl next door” is about new love. “passport” is about jet lag and traveling.
Interestingly, none of the tunes from the mixtapes actually sound close to the sounds MGK had back during his mixtape days. So perhaps Blog Era Boyz is only paying homage to the artist’s early days in spirit. However, many of the songs do share a similar vibe to Wiz Khalifa’s blog era days, featuring a signature hypnotic backdrop and melodic hook. Blog Era Boys brings the simplistic, nostalgic vibe back to the present day with a modern production and pop sensibility.
