Review: THE HYBRIS ‘Cozy Resistance’

Evil comes in different forms and shapes. While in fictional worlds, monsters often take on a physical form, in the real world, many forces that are killing and destroying our body and soul are often invisible. They feed on our misery, fear, and doubts, killing people without knowing. THE HYBRIS, the rock n roll superhero trio are on a life-saving mission in Cozy Resistance, identifying and slamming the monsters at your doorstep.

After releasing a string of singles, Cozy Resistance catches THE HYBRID in full range and power for the first time. Their sounds have matured drastically in a relatively short period of time. In the album, it’s not hard to observe the emergence of their signature. THE HRBRIS isn’t constraint by form. Driven by storytelling, their approach to the song form has expressive and free in spirit. With free jazz as its attitude while sonically drawing elements from punk rock, alternative, grunge and hard rock.

With eclectic sonic palettes, punchy drum beats and stadium-filling volumes, they are beginning to show signs of platinum-selling act. They are punk, but they are redefining punk in modern times. Evil, no matter sizes, are all being made aware in this album. From mental health issues to religious extremism, political violence, and war, Cozy Resistance tackles them all.

“Impostor Syndrome” is wickedly flaming. Like an anti-hero showing its vulnerable skin. The song is wrenching with the intensity of inner struggles. Sometimes, we are our own enemy. The voices in our head, telling us that we are not good enough is like a sword pointed to our heart. Powered by storytelling, each pause, break and move hits differently.

“Hey, Death!” is an instant classic that gives you goosebumps. Channeling a darker energy, THE HYBRIS charms us with its unique moodiness, addressing a letter to death with its chin up. The guitar licks feel like a blanket that wraps you up, but the dissonance and kind of emo angst hits the right spot. “Hey, Death!” is different from anything you’ve heard before and has the marking of commercially successful hits.

THE HYBRID in a way is meant for a live audience to enjoy. The buildup in every song feels cathartic and stirring. They have the fire and volume to rock any venue. With infectious grooves and evocative rhythms, their music create a vibe around you, at the same time, giving you clarity at where you need the most attention.

“Superhero Break Between” sees the superheroes returning to normal life after a day of crime fighting. The track captures the beauty and peace in life, like sunrise, shedding hope and light into the heart.

From a Batman vibe, intimidating “Keep The Wolves Away” to a laidback and spiraling “What If,” “Your Abyss” concludes the album on a heartfelt note. Written from the perspective of a friend, it tells the story of watching someone you care being consumed by addiction. The soulful track tries to tear through the walls to get a message across. In the end, Cozy Resistance is about saving the ones we love.
