Some Remain On the Making Of “Feel Low“

What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "Feel Low?"

Jamie: I wrote “Feel Low” initially during lockdown and thought it was a nice melodic change to our normal sound. It was one of the first songs we wrote as a band in general and really felt like we had made a step forward in dynamics and songwriting. We all contributed different elements too so it was really the first song that represented us as a band fully.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this single to life?

Well we had put off recording this song for a long time. We were frankly afraid of putting out something sub par as we knew the song really deserved a high quality treatment. When Jamie Hyland (from M(h)aol) got in touch with us, we knew we had a chance to make something that was a step above our previous releases. We recorded the tracks ourselves in summer '24 and worked with Jamie to make sure we had the result we had in our heads over the next months. We were blown away by how polished it sounds and are really grateful for Jamie reaching out.

How does "Feel Low" fit into your overall artistic vision and what can listeners expect from you in the future?

“Feel Low” is definitely an outlier in our catalogue. We've had it written for years and since writing it we've put a lot of work into developing our sound. What we took from feel low that we definitely hope to bring forward is incorporating more interesting textures and layers in our instrumentation and we definitely want to bring in more eclectic sounds on future projects.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

Colm and Jamie started out recording experimental, left-field covers purely to entertain themselves, intended for YouTube. This led to showcasing these esoteric performances live and meeting some other musicians while busking on the streets of Sligo. Through various iterations, the lineup eventually included Leo, who got a bass for Christmas, and Matthew, who had a pair of drumsticks. When the lockdown times set in, they began writing and recording a few tunes in their rehearsal space. A live video they posted got some traction and caught the attention of Blowtorch Records, leading to a string of singles, round the clock high energy gigs and eventually the EP we have coming in July.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Since Dead Sound we've had a lot of fun writing with a lyrical premise in mind. Before that, it was a case of working on musical ideas and filling in the blanks but we really like coming into the writing process with more fully formed ideas now. Our writing process is still largely based on working together in practice or meeting in groups of 2 or 3 to hone in and develop ideas that are presented to everyone later. As far as inspiration? It would be little observations in people or hearing something that catches our ears and getting a drive to make something that hits us the same way.
