The Burbs On the Making Of “There's No Time For Presents”
What was the creative process like for this particular single?
This song was a crowd favourite, so we went and recorded it. It’s a bit weird when you’re a small band cos you end up playing a lot of unreleased stuff at gigs, but it’s also cool cos then you get to find which tracks people are liking and our fans are basically helping shape our discography.
How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "There's No Time For Presents?"
I don’t know where the melody came from, that just kinda fell outta the sky. The theme for the lyrics was ‘a story to a friend to tell them I’m here for them no matter what’, so that fell into place without too many dramas, it just took a bit of time with the pen and paper. The most exciting part was adding some of the juicy basslines and drum fills and turning it from an acoustic folk tune into a rock track.
How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?
This is not something we’ve ever really thought about… artistic identity. It sorta feels like someone asking “why are you wearing your favourite t-shirt?”… and “how do you know it’s your favourite t-shirt” like, I dunno, you just do. This song feels to us like we’re putting on our favourite t-shirt.
Can you tell us more about you as a trio?
We all like a game of pool at the local with the local DJ. We like looking for aliens at night. We’re all addicted to Sonic Energy. And we have a growing interest in taxidermy.
Can you share a special moment when you felt a deep connection with the audience?
One of my favourites is being on the radio and someone texts in saying we love The Burbs or something like that, and you’ve got no idea who it was, it’s like getting a note from a secret admirer. But there have been so many things, lots of crashing on people’s couches and going on late night missions together and people asking to write songs together and deep chats into the night and all different types of things like that. Being asked to play house parties is the other thing that’s really nice, I don’t know why, it just feels special when you get asked.
