THE RADIO ADDICTS Release New Single: “LET’S PARTY LIKE IT’S THE 90s”
Punk Head: You’re teenagers writing a song about partying like it’s the 90s. What do you think people from that era got right that your generation is missing?
The Radio Addicts: One thing that my generation suffers is from is being self conscious. Because of social media everyone’s anxiety is going through the roof, people won’t live in the moment or be their true self because they get too self conscious on what other people think of them but in reality nobody really cares, if someone sees someone having a nice time that person won’t judge someone because their having a nice time in fact they will likely envy that person for being confident enough to be themselves so one thing my generation is missing is being them self’s and as soon as we realise that nobody is constantly judging us and thinking about our every mistake we have ever made, then we will all feel so much better.
Punk Head: A lot of young guitar bands today feel very polished or carefully curated online, whereas this track feels intentionally messy, loud, and impulsive. Was that something you wanted to preserve?
The Radio Addicts: I don’t think we ever purposely try to preserve anything in the band it’s just what comes natural to us so if our sound is messy and loud that’s cool but we never really go for a polished sound and we never try to change our selfs for social media or for the industry, the moment you start changing your self to fit the mold of what people stereotypically want that’s the moment a band dies so we are gonna keep being our self and whatever sound we make that’s natural and that’s all we care about.
Punk Head: There’s a line in the release about “mobile phone amateur documentarians.” Do you think nights out have become less fun now everyone’s filming everything?
The Radio Addicts: It really depends on the circumstance. I’ve gone on nights out and i’ve taken silly pictures and videos of my friends and they are funny to record and capture and we love it and they are a memorys of what a great time we had. But when your at a gig and there’s a guy stood infront of 10 people with a phone out not watching the band but filming it so they can put it on youtube for 10 views and then gets annoyed that your singing the song whiles its being played while he’s filming that’s when it becomes less fun. So if phones are being used to enhance a night out and create memories through funny pictures then i’m all for it. But if it’s people are just stood there filming not having a nice time that’s when it ruins it for me.
Punk Head: What’s the most chaotic house party experience that fed into this track?
The Radio Addicts: I have never really been to a house party before, ive only been too one and that was a video shoot for the “Let’s Party Like It’s The 90s” music video and that was long after i wrote the song. What really fed into the song was me craving that feeling of partying as when i wrote the song i hadn’t been to a gig in ages and i really wanted to go to a gig and let loose with my friends and do mosh pits and have a great time that’s what really fueled the song.
Punk Head: The song has Britpop DNA running through it. Which 90s bands genuinely connect with you, and which ones feel overrated?
The Radio Addicts: There has never been overrated music. There is never any bad music. Music is subjective and that’s what i love about music it’s incredible. I’m not the biggest fan of pulp but my friend is and seeing his face light up as songs like year 2000 play makes me so happy as it may not be my favourite but seeing how people connect with music it’s incredible. Some 90s bands that really fueled this track was bands like Green Day and Oasis but also allot of more modern bands like The Wombats or The Kairos also fuild the song as well so we never like to stick to one generation of music. We don’t want to be the 2nd Oasis we want to be the first Radio Addicts.
Punk Head: The vinyl sellout suggests fans want to physically invest in the band early. Do you feel like you’re building a community as much as an audience?
The Radio Addicts: The community part of our audience i love as at times i feel like we don’t have fans, we have friends and we can speak to them about the setlist or what kind of songs they want released but we are still a small young band so even though we have a small community in our fan base we are still a young new band from Bolton so our goal is always to get new fans but naturally it all comes together like a community.
