TONEai Releases “Americans”
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — In a musical landscape where unity and truth feel increasingly urgent, TONEai—the collaboration between new wave icon Tony Ortiz and producer Steve Shepherd —is set to release “Americans.” The new single, arriving Friday, January 30 via Hygh Tension Records (TLG) / Virgin Music Group, is more than a song; it’s a clear-eyed statement rooted in history, conviction, and hope.
“Americans” blends the unmistakable voice of Ortiz—best known as the lead singer of The Monroes and the voice behind the enduring new wave classic “What Do All the People Know?” —with Shepherd’s modern, purposeful production. The track also features electric guitar work from Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum, adding urgency and texture without distracting from the song’s central message.
The result is a protest anthem that confronts the fractures of the present moment while refusing cynicism. With Ortiz’s lived perspective and Shepherd’s contemporary framing, “Americans” speaks to resilience, responsibility, and the possibility of unity without denial.
“‘Americans’ is not just a pop song—it’s a declaration,” says Shepherd. “In this moment, we have to protect democracy and stand together, no matter what.”
For Ortiz, the song is deeply personal. A longtime Minnesota resident and second-generation American, his connection to the country’s promises—and its failures—runs through every line.
“I’m an American, second generation, and I love this country,” Ortiz says. “This song is about standing up for one another and embracing the true spirit of America.”
Rather than shouting slogans, “Americans” draws its power from clarity and conviction. It honors disagreement while rejecting political violence and deception, offering a protest rooted not in anger alone, but in love for what the country has been—and what it can still become.
“All the words matter,” Shepherd adds. “They’re exactly what needed to be said.”
