ULTAN On the Making Of “The Tempest”
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "The Tempest?"
I've always had an interest in history and medieval history laid the foundation for the world we now live in. When you consider the countless battles and high casualty rate it makes you wonder how these historical events affected people at a personal level. People were prepared to sacrifice everything and gamble on the outcome. The Jacobite rebellion was one such moment. I mention Culloden but it could have been any battle in that era.
How do you feel "The Tempest" represent your artistic identity?
I suppose I like to address the real issues that face the ordinary people. Their struggles, triumphs and woes. There are a few subjects I would shy away from in my songwriting. My songs tend to be stories about something. I like to keep it real.
What did you enjoy most about making this single?
To be honest, I like the structure and how the second riff acts as an interlude and outro. Both riffs just came to me naturally out of the ether. I like them both but was dead pleased with the second one - I think they complement each other very well.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
Ha! A career in music....I'm confused. This is a labour of love. Outputting music takes time, effort and a lot of expense. As you know its all free streaming these days. There is zero reimbursement. A career in music indeed....in my dreams.
Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?
Yes, quite a few singles still to be released and I hope I can somehow find a venue that will cater for the original artist so I can put on a show. Plenty of venues for cover bands but you have to ensure a sizeable audience before anywhere will let an original act do their thing - so it's hard to get started. Anyway....trying to keep the faith. Onward and upward!
