What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of song?
“Deep End” was born at a time when lots of change was happening in my life. I felt like I was on the cusp of something new, but in order to get there, I had to let go and just trust the process - which felt really scary.
It’s kind of just all my musings as someone in her late 20s trying to figure stuff out. It was inspired by crushing on someone in secret and wondering if they like you back. I was also watching lots of Sex and The City at the time, so I kinda tried imagine how I’d write about my dating life in a Carrie tone.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Deep End?"
This was the first time I wrote a lot of the song on the day in the studio. Usually I come super prepared and have the entire song ready, but this time I went with the flow and wrote the second verse and bridge on the day. It was nice to be in the moment and just fully immerse myself in the writing process without putting any pressure on myself.
Can you describe the emotions or feelings you hope "Deep End" evokes in listeners?
”Deep End” is one for all the yearners. I want listeners to feel hopeful that whatever they’re musing about is about to happen.
What is your songwriting process like? How do you usually start crafting a new song?
I am always writing in my journal or notes app! I usually start with a line or two that I really like, find a chord progression and then go from there. I watch a lot of movies and like to read too, so sometimes I pull inspiration from whatever form of media I’m consuming at the time. But a lot of my lyrics come straight from my journal.
How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?
I’ve learned to trust myself and trust the songwriting process a lot more. I used to put a lot of pressure on myself when I first started releasing music to succeed. But over the years I’ve realised I just love making music and creating things. So I try to lean into that and do what feels right creatively.
