Inside Romeo Saints’ “JUJU VIBES,” Where Trauma Becomes Power

Punk Head: ”JUJU VIBES" feels like it belongs in a dark club at 3 a.m., but it's rooted in something very real. Was that contrast intentional from the beginning?

Romeo Saints: Yes, the contrast was entirely intentional. From 2022 until 2026, I endured four years of unrelenting harassment and stalking by a former neighbor. It was a living nightmare that only ended when I finally managed to move out this year. When you are trapped in a situation where your peace and safety are constantly violated, the walls feel like they are closing in. "JUJU VIBES" needed to have that dark, heavy, 3 a.m. club energy because that pressure mimics the psychological weight of what I was living through. But I didn't want the track to feel defeated. The heavy progressive house beat is there to reclaim that darkness—taking the claustrophobia of those four years and turning it into an environment where I am completely in control.

Punk Head: You describe the track as a "sonic shield." What does protection sound like to you?

Romeo Saints: To me, protection doesn't sound quiet or fragile; it sounds aggressive, heavy, and impenetrable. When you are dealing with years of stalking, you are constantly on guard. Protection sounds like a driving bassline and sharp, hypnotic syncopation that drowns out the external noise. It’s a wall of sound that physically blocks out the malice directed at you. By building "JUJU VIBES" into a peak-time club weapon, I constructed a boundary. The music is an energetic shield where no one can touch me, judge me, or break my spirit.

Punk Head: The lyric "My true colours shine, they couldn't dim the flame" feels like the emotional climax of the record. Did that line come early in the writing process or did it unlock the song later?

Romeo Saints: That line unlocked the entire song. It came from a place of pure defiance after realizing that despite four years of someone actively trying to break my mental health and diminish my presence, I was still standing. Stalking is an attempt to make you shrink, to make you live in fear, and to dim your light. Writing that lyric was my moment of standing completely in the sun. It was the realization that my identity, my pride, and my creativity survived the fire intact. The flame didn't go out; it just got hotter.

Punk Head: Progressive house often tells stories without saying much lyrically. What made you decide this record needed your own voice front and centre?

Romeo Saints: Progressive house is incredible for creating atmosphere, but an atmospheric track wasn't enough to carry the weight of this chapter. Hiding behind purely instrumental elements felt like I was still hiding from the trauma. I needed to use my own voice front and center because vocalizing my experience is an act of reclamation. When you’ve been targeted and harassed, speaking out with your own voice is the ultimate assertion of power. It ground the track in human reality and serves as an unapologetic statement of survival.

Punk Head: The phrase "Architect of Survival" is a striking way to describe yourself. What does that mean beyond this single release? Is it becoming part of the wider philosophy behind Romeo Saints as an artist?

Romeo Saints: Being the "Architect of Survival" means acknowledging that surviving trauma isn't passive—it requires deliberate, painful, and strategic design. I had to consciously architect a way out of a hostile living situation while keeping my artistry alive from 2022 to 2026. Beyond this single, that phrase is the foundational philosophy of Romeo Saints. Moving forward, my music will always be a blueprint for resilience, queer liberation, and reclaiming power. It means I am no longer defined by what was done to me by a neighbor; I am defined by the art, the life, and the future I am actively choosing to build.
