Kay Soul On the Making Of “In Between”

What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for “In Between?”

I was watching a message on YouTube and the speaker was talking about trusting God when things are not going right. The message really struck a chord with me and I thought there must be so many people that struggle to keep the faith when life gets difficult. I know that I have. I went into the studio that day and worked on the song for the rest of the day. I wanted it to be honest and uplifting.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "InBetween?”

“In Between” was more experimental for me since I wanted to showcase upbeat energy and have some danceability. The studio session for the official recording was very fun. It felt special knowing that I was showcasing a different side of myself. Navigating exactly how to deliver the rap was a standout moment trying to find that balance between aggression, gentleness, and soul.

How does this song fit into your overall artistic vision and what can listeners expect from you in the future?

I am a fusion artist. “In Between” feels like a combination of all the music I have created. It’s soulful, hip-hop, edgy yet uplifting. It fits into my vision of always pushing myself to showcase my versatility and expand my creativity. I aim to maintain a distinct sound while giving listeners something fresh. It’s the lead single for my upcoming album “Heavy Set” that will be a fusion of genres while still staying true to my overall sound, feel, and message.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?

I have been writing songs and singing since I was a kid. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago with my grandparents. Music was always my outlet. I started with writing poetry. I found that I could express myself better in written form. I instantly felt music was a safe space. I found comfort in music. I began recording songs at age 19. After some rough starts and stops, in 2012 I decided I wanted to pursue music as a serious professional. I released my first song commercially in 2014 and the rest is history!

Do you aim to convey any specific themes or messages through your music?

I am a healing artist. I make music for the heart, soul, and mind. My goal is to share the broken pieces of myself in hopes that others will find their own inner beauty and self-worth. I aim to convey themes of self-love, healing, and growth wrapped in spiritual awareness and mental wellness.
