Lolo Darko On the Making Of “Lajan”

What was the creative process like for this particular single?

So I was just listening to "cocorico" by sweet mickey for maybe the 97th time in a row and then I decided to chop it up and make the beat out of it. The hook just came to my head, and whenever that happens I know it’s good.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "Lajan?"

eeh, I don't really think too deeply into that. But I always try to have my arrangements as hook, verse hook. short and sweet.

What impact do you hope "Lajan" will have on your audience?

I hope that Lajan reaches all of my Haitian people and it helps them manifest Lajan for themselves.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?

So I got started into music at church. I was in choir as a kid and alot of my homies played instruments in church, BUT THEN I got into hip-hop through my older cousin Rollins. He had all the fire rap albums back in the early 2000s. I remember sitting in front of the old radio and listening to "Weatherman" by Jim Jones over and over and over and over again 😂 Something about me is that I'll listen to the same song repeatedly.

How do you feel about the increasing popularity of genre-blending and experimentation in contemporary music?

I love blending genres and I think music needs more of it. People like to be boxed in but I could never. You can't create anything without experimenting first. You may like what you make or you may hate it. I feel like we are all experiments ourselves.
