Miles Nxbxdy On the Making Of “ENTERTAINMENT!!!”
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "ENTERTAINMENT!!!?"
I would say the idea was I was trying to put up a front, but the sadness and anger I felt toward the world around me, my mental health, and just the constant pressure of life cracked me and I lost it. Fun fact I wrote and recorded the song in a serious manic episode.
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this song to life?
Me and my producer Jason Freeze originally only made a 30-second part of the instrumental that was for a 3-part song. Although, after listening back a few weeks later, we decided it was the best part of the song. When we decided to make it what it was, our goal was to make something ridiculously aggressive and unforgiving.
Is there a particular message or theme you hope listeners take away from this single?
Not to sound cliche, but its that the world is fucked, and its not okay, and no matter how much we try to hide from it or deny it, it all still effects us. So it's okay to be angry, sad, or defeated, just be honest with yourself.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
That's hard for me, not in like a pretentious way, but more of a "I dunno I'm Miles" kind of way. I find it way easier to explain a song or project, but I'll try my best. Making music is probably the only thing I am actually good at. I am influenced by a lot of artists, most notably Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan, Sufjan Stevens, Death Grips, Fiona Apple, Idles, and Denzel Curry. In making music, I want people to feel they see themselves in me, hence the Nxbxdy, I want it to be a relationship of I am you and you are me. Outside of that, I want my music to be intense, so even if you don't understand it, you feel it.
Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and composing music?
Me and my producer Jason Freeze meet about once a week and have been for years now. When we create, we don't think about whether I'll rap on it or not, but just if it feels good. If it feels good and I put lyrics to it but if not its ok, our motto is fuck around and find out. My writing process is all over the place. Sometimes I write the hook verse, the verse, or the bridge. Other times, I record without fully writing the song out. Sometimes I don't remember the writing process or the recording process, with little fragments of what happened. “ENTERTAINMENT!!!” wasn't fully written when I started recording it, I just kept trying things, letting my intuition take over.
