MORTEZ On the Making Of “Coven”
What was the creative process like for this particular single?
A melody came to Rachele in a dream. Upon awakening, she played the melody for Brett on piano. The dream presented a darkness which embodied shadow work. As Rachele and Brett began to write, the initial idea was the battle with our internal demons. Brett then brought the composition to life which ignited the second message of the song. Calling upon our coven, i.e. (loved ones, etc)gives us solace knowing we are not alone.
Can you talk about the recording and production process for "Coven?"
Brett: “We recorded “Coven” in our home studio which gives us the freedom to take our time- really dive in to every moment and make sure it’s as polished as possible.”
Rachele: “I wanted to start with acapella stacked vocals for the hook. Brett was able to build the structure of the song out from there, which then helped me organize lyrically.”
What impact do you hope "Coven" will have on your audience?
We want our beloved Mortezians to manifest their dream life. As you chant the chorus you visualize your highest self. You call upon your ancestors, guardian angels, deities, etc, for strength. This song is about winning the battle with your inner demons and coming out victorious. Everyone has a coven, you just have to know how to call on them.
Can you tell us more about you as a duo?
Rachele: “Brett has given me a safe space to rebuild my relationship with music. It’s been a dark road so it is nothing short of a miracle that I am singing and writing again. Deep, powerful symphonic rock ballads no less! I am so grateful to be able to heal through our music and loving relationship as a couple.”
Brett: “It’s not too common in life that you meet someone with such a similar creative energy as yourself. I knew from the moment I met her and first heard her sing, that if we got the chance to work together we could make something truly magical. Now we get to do just that. Make magic!”
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
Rachele: “Growing up in a competitive dance studio, the genius of Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Imogene Heap were the main characters in my childhood musically. I can’t deny that Christina Aguilera and Britney also shaped me as an artist. Give me the drama, a huge stadium anthem from the soul and I’m a happy artist :)”
Brett: “I was raised on rock n roll baby!! My mom was a fan of every glam rock band under the sun and she fed them to me. Bon jovi, foreigner, scorpions, you name it! Around 14-15, as you do, I developed my own taste. Which all started from the moment I heard avenged sevenfold on the radio.. i was hooked! A7X, Slipknot, FFDP, black veil brides, the metal scene was my whole identity for my high-school years. In college, however, i began studying film scoring. Orchestration, harmony and theory, etc. Which helped me fine-tune the absolute admiration I have epic and orchestral music.
So you blend the two and wallah! MORTEZ”
