Peter Martin Voy On the Making Of “Safe With Me”

Punk Head: The theme of safety in connection is timeless. Was this written for a specific person or more as a universal message?

Peter Martin Voy: For me, “Safe With Me” is both deeply personal and universal. It began as a very real moment of connection with someone who made me feel understood in a quiet, grounding way. But as the song grew, I realized that this feeling—of belonging, trust, and emotional refuge—is something we all long for, no matter who we are or where we come from.

So while the spark came from one person, the message is meant for anyone who has ever felt held, supported, or seen by another human being.

Punk Head: You draw comparisons to Phil Collins and James Bay. Which elements of your songwriting do you feel most rooted in the “classic pop” tradition?

Peter Martin Voy: I grew up with timeless pop songwriting where the heart of the song always came first. From Phil Collins, I’ve always admired the emotional clarity — saying something simple but with real weight. And from artists like James Bay, I connect with the narrative style that carries both intimacy and cinematic tension.

For me, “classic pop” means strong melodies, honest lyrics, and arrangements that lift the story rather than distract from it. I try to write in a way where the listener immediately understands the emotion — even before the words fully land.

Punk Head: What was one musical decision in the production that completely changed the song for the better?

Peter Martin Voy: For a long time, the song lived in a very acoustic and intimate space. The moment that truly changed everything was when we added the soft, arpeggiated synth textures in the background. They created a sense of movement and emotional elevation without overwhelming the organic core of the track.

That atmospheric layer opened up the whole world of the song — it gave “Safe With Me” a modern, warm, almost weightless quality that mirrors the feeling of trust the lyrics are built around. Suddenly the song felt complete.

Punk Head: Who do you imagine “Safe With Me” resonating with - couples, friends, families, people going through personal chaos?

Peter Martin Voy: I imagine it resonating with anyone who needs a moment of calm and connection — whether that’s couples, friends, families, or someone going through their own personal storm.

At its core, the song is about emotional grounding. When life feels overwhelming, one steady voice can feel like home. I hope the song becomes that for people — a place to breathe, reset, and feel understood.

Punk Head: What do you enjoy most about being an independent artist, building something on your own terms?

Peter Martin Voy: What I love most is the freedom to create honestly. As an independent artist, I can follow inspiration without compromise — from the sound to the visuals to the storytelling. There’s something incredibly meaningful about building a world from the ground up and connecting with listeners in a way that feels real and personal.

It’s a slower path sometimes, but it’s authentic — and that authenticity is what keeps me inspired.
