Rosetta West On the Making Of “Dora Lee (Gravity)”

How did you come up with the idea?

I think most people have experience with a fleeting passionate encounter with another person that they think back on often. It doesn't even have to be physical to be meaningful. It's just my natural inclination to take that and turn the person in question into a magical or supernatural being. As for the video, I figured it would be more interesting to make the person reminiscing wistfully about a hardened tank commander rather than a musician or other traditionally sensitive person.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "Dora Lee (Gravity)?"

Well, the riff and chorus are fairly straightforward blues rock. The bridge is an interesting addition, and the solo is aggressive and exciting I think, but honestly it's a musically simple song. I have a lot of songs with really ambitious arrangements but I think the magic here is mainly in the delivery.

Is there a particular message or theme you hope listeners take away from "Dora Lee (Gravity)?"

Musically I hope it rocks them, and lyrically I hope it resonates with an experience they've had and helps put it in perspective.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

All of us have very broad musical tastes, and we're very independent, so there's never a feeling of limits to what we can do.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you are particularly excited about?

Well, "Dora Lee (Gravity)" is from an EP called "Gravity Sessions" which should be out on the streaming platforms by the time people read this interview. It's us playing mostly live in a prominent Chicago studio and I think people will like it. Thanks for this opportunity.
