Vendetta Deluxe On the Making Of ‘The Drowning Sound’
Can you talk about any specific themes or motifs that run throughout 'The Drowning Sound?’
I guess there are a few themes from climate change, racism, religious nepotism to abuse, relationships, equality and death but I suppose a lot of it has an underlying nod to time. Whether it’s time running out or possibly the regret of time spent with the wrong people.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this album?
Apart from me being unhappy with my guitar sound and re-recording them all about 3 times I would say that Adam and Dave working on specifics like bass runs, drum fills and harmonies was what suddenly brought the songs to life for me.
What impact do you hope 'The Drowning Sound' will have on your audience?
I hope the impact is one of reflection from the lyrical content juxtaposed to how we have hopefully captured the sound and energy of the live set without compromising on the production. A few people have quoted words back to me that have landed with them and resonated and that’s got to be the greatest compliment I could ever get.
Can you tell us more about you as a band?
As people, we are pretty much an easy-going bunch - although the others would probably say I kick off quite a bit - obviously it’s always due to some despicable politics or some right-wing idiot! I’m always correct of course!!! (Insert laughing emoji)
We have various musical tastes that do cross over a lot. I grew up listening to punk - The Clash, Pistols, Damned, SLF, Stranglers, UK Subs etc and then some goth and indie into grunge (mainly Nirvana for me but I know Adam is a big Soundgarden fan) which is where we all possibly cross over. Dave and I have played support with a lot of my heroes like SLF, The Stranglers, Mick Jones etc and Adam has played with some big names too.
What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?
Emotions are the basis for all of the lyrics whether reactive or contemplative and hopefully the music is always grounded in feel, energy and honesty. Our performances are usually pretty lively so I suppose channelling that comes quite naturally to all of us. Hopefully without too many dodgy notes!
