Cas du Pree’s “Blank Page” Explores the Creative Fear Every Artist Knows
Punk Head: Blank Page is about fearing that inspiration might disappear. Was writing that fear into a song a way of confronting it, or did it arrive naturally while you were creating?
Cas du Pree: It came really natural really. All I remember was watching a music documentary where a sentence just stuck with me and I knew exactly how this would fit the narrative. The lyrics came quite easy on this one!
Punk Head: You joked that you became Mike's muse. What do you think he hears in your music that inspires him creatively?
Cas du Pree: It's hard to speak on his behalf, but I think neither of us is afraid to take a gamble and follow a hunch. We keep eachother on our toes and never know really what to expect. Having that constant element of surprise is really inspiring.
Punk Head: The song feels polished, but the subject matter is deeply personal. Is making vulnerable ideas sound accessible part of your songwriting philosophy?
Cas du Pree: I just grew into music this way. My music has always been personal, at least the lyrics are. My music has been constantly evolving, but this never changed and I am proud of that. It might be my trademark!
Punk Head: You recorded this in your new home studio, describing it as "a home within a home." Has having your own creative space changed the way ideas develop?
Cas du Pree: It definitely helps to have your personal space to work in. But this space is mainly used for recording. Creative inspiration rarely comes inside my studio since it's a stable factor. For inspiration I need to see or hear things! There has to be happening things!
Punk Head: You've said this is exactly the direction you want to pursue. Beyond Blank Page, what does this new era allow you to do that previous projects didn't?
Cas du Pree: I am thankful for all me and my former team created in the past 6 years. To keep evolving it just feels right to seek out other collaborations, and each has their own challenges or bonuses. This moment would not have happened unless it was time. Time to experiment even further. This time I know who I am and what I'd like to do. I am ready and I hope you are too!
