Inside DIV1NE’s Raw, Unfiltered World of Memory Loss and Survival
Punk Head: Trauma is central to this song. Did the act of creating "BL4CK0UT" change how you perceive that manic episode in hindsight?
DIV1NE: It definitely helped me process alot of feelings, racing thoughts and fears I had. I go to multiple therapy services and I want to be open with that to people.
I think for myself, someone who’s very self aware, it’s more of just getting the thoughts in your head out into the open. This really impacts how you process information, trauma and emotions, due to the fact you’re using the speaking part of your brain, you are literally processing things with a separate part of your brain than when it’s stuck inside it!
Punk Head: Your bedroom is your creative sanctuary—how does this personal space influence the sonic textures and emotional honesty of your work?
DIV1NE: I believe it brings a real personal and raw touch to my work. I spend most of my life cooped up in my room, but when I have an idea i can instantly get into my little “studio” and start creating whenever I want to!
It allows my creation to follow my pace exactly. No timeline to follow with studio booking and just being in a comfortable area really impacts how much emotion you can bring out of yourself.
Punk Head: Millions struggle with conditions like BPD or bipolar disorder, but few artists tackle it so openly. How do you hope your music impacts listeners who may be going through similar experiences?
DIV1NE: Listening to music to me is not only an escape, but a way to feel less alone. This is why music is an integral part of my everyday routine, it helps me feel less alone, and it’s always there, it never leaves.
I just hope by tackling the issues I deal with I can give someone the feeling I get listening to music. My wish is to truly connect with someone’s soul and let them know i’m there for them when they need me. If i could personally talk to everyone struggling with mental health I would. Everyone deserves a voice and to be listened to. I’ll always reply to a person who needs an ear, or advice or just someone.
I know how it is to truly feel alone.
Punk Head: You cite fakemink’s uncanny, sped-up production as an influence—what drew you to that style, and how did you make it your own?
DIV1NE: I loved the uncanny effect it gave his music, and I felt that almost embodied the horrid feeling of losing days of memories in episodes. You hear the music but somethings just, off? It gives that almost intense uncomfortable vibe but in a way that works well with the structure and production.
The main thing that sets it apart from fakemink is that the music itself is just different. Yes there are similarities to mine and fakemink’s music but my production especially is quite a different vibe and genre to his.
Always big up artists from Essex where I’ve lived my whole life, gotta represent.
