Music Review: “Spoke For What I Knew” by Ben Aubergine
Cinematic and a little punk, “Spoke For What I Knew” is beautiful collision of influences with a soul of alternative rock and the lush production of pop. A fabulous blend of genre that feels deliciously freeing and energetic sonically, even though it journeys through uncertain water.
Originally written in 1998 and produced decades later, Ben Aubergine travels back in time with “Spoke For What I Knew,” a song about two people falling out of rhythm. Tackling themes such as the breakdown of a relationship, the right person at the wrong time, the track features a moody and soul-baring solo in addition to Aubergine’s raw and expressive vocal.
While the track touches on a heavy topic on the lyrical level, the introspective track weaves layers of emotions. Uncertainty marks the core emotion, but there’s also a seek for resolution and freedom, a desire to embark on the journey of unknown again even though the path to nirvana requires death as part of the transformation.
The bouncy ska rhythm is not without a sense of teen spirits and wonder. Meanwhile, there’s fragility and grief in the soundscapes in the exploration of the nuances of misaligned emotions. Aubergine approaches the song he wrote almost in a different life that perserves the rawness and the vulnerability, but not without a pinch of nostalgia and wisdom, which adds depth to the song.
“Spoke For What I Knew” is minimalstic in form and structure, but Aubergine manages to achieve so much in its sonic storytelling, which results the song being fascinatingly rich and almost non-linear.
“Spoke For What I Know” is only the first single from the singer-songwriter, and from what we’ve heard, this is a very strong start for the artist.
