Neska Rose On the Making Of “Bubbling!”
What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Bubbling!?"
I was feeling heartbroken. But then I was like, I can’t believe I’m feeling this way over this guy and this is embarrassing!
I was heavy into Roy Orbison, listening to the ‘Crying’ album and I was so fascinated by how he could write such universal, heartbreaking lyrics but on top of these cool, jazzy diminished chords. So, I challenged myself to write in a way. Not in a cryptic or vague way as I’m prone to do but to write a simple line for the hook. What came out was, ‘When I look into your eyes, I am so pacified’. It was about this guy who was always trying to get me in his hot tub. So the hook became, ‘I’m sure it’s really Bubbling in there!’ aka he’s in the hot tub with other girlies.
What impact do you hope "Bubbling!" will have on your audience?
I guess if there’s a thought behind the lyrics it’s, if you feel uncomfortable in a situation, then it means your gut is telling you something. Trust your instinct, and be true to yourself.
What was your favorite moment in making the music video?
The whole process really. We went to Joshua Tree with my fam and my friend Charlie, and really wanted to make something loose and unscripted in an homage to all my fav music videos from the 90s. Loser by Beck, The Lovecats, The Cure. We just chilled at this retro house and played around.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
My mom would play music around the house from the moment we’d wake up and certain songs would become an addiction for me. I’d listen to them in the dark and feel like I was tripping. I started playing instruments when I was 5, and kept falling deeply in love with certain singers and artists. It made me want to join their world.
What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?
Emotion is all it is. It’s what inspires me to write the songs. It’s what I tap into in the studio and when playing live. The feeling doesn’t have to be what I felt when I wrote it, just true in that moment.
